Eyes On The Prize

We are living in extraordinary times. I have spells when I forget that and moments when it comes back to me like a thunderclap. I know that the optimism generated by Obama's election will likely puncture. But, for now, I do have the feeling that anything is possible (in a cultural context, but also in every corner of our personal lives.)

If you don't know Mavis Staples, trust me, she is a national treasure. This is from her 2007 album, 'We'll Never Turn Back'.

**But, for now, I do have the feeling that anything is possible**

That's what I've always admired THE MOST regarding America/the Americans - their undaunted, boundless optimism...
We could use some of that down here...we're good at being negative and fearful.
It's amazing to see how one politician can inspire so many people, giving them hope - even in hard times.
That's very UN-European I guess...imagine, Gordon Brown or Angela Merkel as our political symbols of hope...LMAO...hilarious thought.
America IS a very distinct culture...

PS: There's life on planet Emma :)

I told myself I wouldn't cry, but make it through the 4 minutes and 5 seconds remaining stoic. I grinded my teeth, teared up, and I held on like Mavis sings.

There's so much people today take for granted.

Great message.

You know, that's one of those *real-life-fairy-tales*...like the Fall of the Berlin Wall, the election of Nelson Mandela as president of South Africa and the election of Obama as the first multi-ethnic US president...he certainly represents America and all her ethnic and cultural riches.

I just got back from being bridesmaid to my best friend in Dallas.

Every Obama/Biden bumper sticker I saw in the heartland made me smile!

Considering that up until last year I thought that my generation's contribution to the planet would largely go on the history record as "Facebook and Apathy" it's wonderful to see people not being well...embarrassed for giving a shit.

I needed to hear that today, thanks Emma.

LOL...ROTF

Obama won't save us; we have to save ourselves. There is a great deal of work to be done. Obama wants to pacify everyone by compromising on everything. That doesn't pacify people. Ultimately you can't please everyone. Obama wants to please everyone; it isn't possible. I'm surprised he doesn't know this...yet, when you think about it his previous jobs involved a lot of talking (professor, state senator, community organizer) but none of these jobs involved making difficult decisions. I think he is feeling overwhelmed; I see it in his face.
