Emma's Mix Tape Feb 2011

On the train from Toronto to Montreal, I made an ipod playlist of songs that were introduced to me by great friends, family, mentors, boyfriends past and present. They were originals and covers, classics and obscurities, but they had to be songs I'd never heard before I met them. I picture them as donations from people who cared about me (the donatee is in parenthesis):
Another Girl Another Planet - The Only Ones (Julie)
And She Was - Talking Heads (Julie)
Bad Weather - The Supremes (Robin)
Hurdy Gurdy Man -Eartha Kitt (Joe)
Shangri-La - The Kinks (Grace)
State Of Independence - Chrissie Hynde covering Donna Summer!! (Barbara)
Laura Marling- My Manic And I (Colin)
Darkness On The Edge Of Town - Bruce Spingsteen (Richard)
Mockingbirds - Grant Lee Buffalo (Marc)
Heard It Through The Grapevine - The Slits (Ryan)
Long Gone Before Daylight - The Cardigans (Sassica)
You Said Something - PJ Harvey (SB)
With Every Heartbeat - Robyn (SB)
Ecstatic - Mos Def (Mum)
Overload - Sugababes (Lisa)
A Case Of You - Joni Mitchell (Mum)
Pilgrim Chapter 33 - Kris Kristofferson (Dad)
Reckoner - Radiohead (Daniel)
Pi - Kate Bush (Daniel)
There's some people here I haven't spoken to in a decade or more. There's a friend or two I fell out with, badly. My life has been so compartmentalized, it was radical to put these voices from long ago and far away all together on one list. I saw a lot of emotional snapshots - great ones - music being a stronger sense-memory to me than scent.

Comments:
Ecstatic - Mos Def (Mum)

Your mama is so cool ^^

She is. She really is.

I took Laura Marling as a recommendation from somebody else's Spotify and had it on in the background while I was reading your memoir. Nice coincidence.

I don't know if it's a blessing or a curse that the last friend I fell out with badly had appalling taste in music- I was quite pleased that no favourite song would automatically be associated with her. Or maybe we can just put the failed friendship down to musical differences.

I love when you put your mixtapes or list of books and movies you like. Thank You!

Thank you for the playlist. I know some of these songs. Some I don't. New music is good.

PS I just (just) finished Your Voice in My Head. Thank you for sharing/writing/expressing. I needed to read this book. At this moment when I am 1 year out of my own bite of madness (and still have her toe in the pool). Gratitude.
